Thoughts on *Microsoft by the Number*
Microsoft recently wrote a cocky post about numbers and them. When I first saw the title on Daring Fireball, the first thought was “Is microsoft going to make Numbers work better with Excel VBA script/etc?”. Then reality clicked in within that same moment. Wrote about how they assumed we heard the big news about how many copies of the current version of Windows sold on the millions of almost every computers sold ( * SPOILERS * it’s one). This is news in the same way how many car tires are sold is news. Now those numbers:
- A lot of new computers were sold. The “fastest growing” part shows they found new places to shove in the OS.
- This is where it starts to get good. The comparisons of iPad to netbook might seem fair in size of the devices. However, netbook is a general term of a type of product. It would a more reasonable to compare the numbers of each netbook product not one product vs a group of a product type.
- Notice they say Windows and not Windows Vista or XP. For along while XP was the choice for Windows OS on the netbook, even into the Vista release. It’s sad that Linux hasn’t been able to wedge itself better into the market but that’s what happen when a company like Microsoft is able to give encouragements to manufacturers to include there OS.
- The last time I heard Azure, it was dealing with mispronouncing a torrent client. Last time I heard someone randomly point out Kentucky, it was about chicken and horse racing.
- Now that’s interesting. From newspaper, to the hot movie rental company to the gaming network. But are they including Gold (paid accounts) with Silver(free) accounts? I have a Silver Xbox live account but don’t own a Xbox.
- And the beta was free. How many copies did people buy? I’m happy with Textmate, Gmail and Keynote.
- Not sure what a Bing user is….
- Seems like they’re cutting the numbers just right for themselves but I believe Microsoft does hold a solid hand in the server business.
- Windows Mobile is not mention here nore is any other Microsoft product. Let’s not forget about Android and RIM sales.
- Salesforce.com got there in 2008, Microsoft 2009. Also note there Revenue.
- Ok, but how many active users.
- Why not show Apple’s and Google’s numbers for revenue from FY2000 to FY2009? Oh, I see now, Microsoft’s revenue has been dipping since 2008.
The Pandorica Opens
Doctor Who’s series end is pretty exciting. The painting done by Van Gogh, The Pandorica Opens, is amazing (simply on a fan level). However, I wasn’t able to find a large version of the painting. Instead, I took a number of screenshots and used Photoshop to stitch them together. The result is pretty good. I’m still missing a fair amount of pieces. Expect more work to be done and some creative guessing on my part done… when I have time.
On the note of Doctor Who, I saw that The Doctor and Douglas came in the huffduffer’s popular feed. It’s an great overview of Douglas Adams’ start as a writer and the part he played in shaping Doctor Who.
Oh, here’s full uncompressed image:

ComicSanagic
Inspired and insulted by the Helvetify extension for Safari, I decided to create an extension with a font that actually has some class. I present to you the ComicSanagic extension. When enabled, and when wouldn’t you, it will dominate any site with the font that came to us from a yellow smiley face named Bob.

The Flash Wars
As Gruber, Zeldman and now indirectly Jobs have stated something I have been since he start of the “Flash Wars.” Adobe should really stop replying to every reporter, blogger and comments like a hero and just make Flash or some other tool into a HTML5 IDE. This is just a nerd soap opera that is about to get tired.
Supply Room of a Lego Manic
Every version little (and current) Dorian scream with joy and anges for this room.
Webkit2
Apple just announced on the WebKit mailing list the release of Webkit2. The biggest changes is the spilt process model and “a non-blocking API.” Spilt process model is easily under just by the name: each tab will be it’s own process much like chrome. The “non-blocking API” is a bit more complex. It basically seems to enable Webkit to better enable web app to be true applications. Ars Technica has a good explainion on the new API model. With that, I’m curious to see how SSB’s like Fluid would look in the future.

T9 Trace coming soon
Engadget covered T9 Trace yesturday. I first recall seeing T9 Trace at a CES sometime ago. Made by the same people that brought us T9 on non-smartphones, T9 Trace clearly seems to be the next way we’ll be inputting on our phones. The idea is that you trace the path for a word on the keyboard, briefly stopping on each letter. Check the article for a video of similar technology made by another company.
