Ogg isn't a free as you'd believe

A number of people have brought up, why hasn’t Apple included Ogg Theora into iTunes and other iDevices. The main reason is patents. Ogg Theora claims no patents, however as i read in Daring Fireball’s article on GIF, H.264 and Patents, an interview with a member of MPEG LA says otherwise. While it maybe no different from Microsoft’s claim that Linux violates Windows patents, no major company has really it a priority to support it. Rio once did on older devices, but has since felt the time and money spent wasn’t worth the cost. I can’t even recall any major device that plays Ogg without the help of something like Rockbox

Turtle Power!

This morning, as I was eating breakfast, I saw an amazing crossover of cartoon shows. I manage to catch the last twenty minutes of Turtles Forever. The made for TV movie was a great reason to have the Turtles of the 90’s meet the Turtles from the most recent creations.

Later I manage to get my hands on a copy of the movie and it’s fantastic. Tons of nuggets for the fanboys, such as a reference to the Japanese take on the Turtles. Well written and great build of characters over the movies even with moments that where a bit over the top. Some might be taken back how much they point out the goofiness of the 90’s show. However, there is a point where even the characters can’t take it anymore. The movie is without a doubt a must for anyone who was a Turtle fan.

Pro-Lifer's "Cry Wolf"

Commonweal has an article claiming “elective” abortions in the Healthcare bill are simply bogus. The lack of that nobody else has mentioning the Hyde Amendment till this article is odd. It would seem there some loop hole in the wording that not even Obama can’t ignore that states that the Amendment isn’t applied. There are two thing that bothers me about this statement.

The first thing is that bring up FOCA is odd because Obama said he would sign it if it came to his desk. FOCA getting to his desk just seemed absurdly unlikely. Retconing all of the laws pertaining to abortions is near the frustrating confusion that un-marrying Peter Parker & Mary Jane. FOCA seemed to be a lot of anti-Obama rhetoric that states how radically prochoice he is.

Secondly, I just feel it’s odd that Obama needed to address Prolife groups to tell them how the bill would not be used for abortions. That seems to really discredit the Hyde Amendment argument. He made a lot of promises to a lot of groups. I don’t see a reason why couldn’t this bill be used fulfill some of them.

Update 03/21/10 11:21PM

I was just informed that the National Catholic Reporter has stated it supports the health care bill. The article makes a number of points, many of which I didn’t know, about the pro choice laws in place in this country. If this bill was not to be used for the funding of abortions, why haven’t they write “the necessary language that could have taken this moral question off the table.”1

Remail, recent acquired by Google, released there impressive mail client for the iPhone under Apache license. No surprise that it’s hosted on Google Code.

Apple, Flash and Multitasking

It’s been really interesting to see how the iPad, particularly Steve Job’s intensional demo of it’s lack of Flash, have allowed this conversation about Flash and it’s place in the web. My major grib with Flash was same that Zeldman made, lack of accesible and open standard. I can understand that there are advantages to ana closed system. Flash and the web isn’t one of them. Over the years Flash has become loud and heavy and is something I didn’t realize till I heard how Apple says plugins (replace that with Flash) are the number on reason why OSX crashes. I found that a bit hard to believe that the whole OS would crash because of a browser plugin, until i notices how often some Adobe service is continuously ping something or another in the Console.

The thought about Apple, Flash and performance made me thing of iPhone multitasking and performance. Recent events show that Apple clearly wants to push the open web standard of HTML5 over Flash. Apple also placed a focus on web apps over natives apps. This could be because the SDK wasn’t ready at the time or the were hoping that web apps would take off. The advantage for Apple and web apps is it’s seems to be easier to control multitasking, hence battery life will improve. Having 3rd party apps running in the background of the iPhone (or in my case a jailbroken iPod touch) can be a real hit in battery life. I’d used it for a number apps just to have quick access to them. The hit in battery was enough for me to stop the practice. I think that might be the main reason why we haven’t seen it yet. Until we see some radical improvements in battery life or Apple finds that magic API call that will have 3rd party apps running with a minimal or no hit to battery, we won’t see multitasking.

Happy New Year but not to my server...

Apparently transferring over my site to a new server at the same night before my interview for Jesus and Mary Hope Ministry’s radio show wasn’t a good idea. The mysql database was corrupted and now i only have a portfolio from 2years ago available. Recreating my layout shouldn’t take long. It’s just that’s 5am and I’m beat.

Update at 9:04am: Old portfolio
